Emigration to Guiana with Ana Isabel Spranger (Researcher)
Madeiran emigration to Demerara began in 1835, at the initiative of the English cônsul resident in Madeira, who hired workers for Guyana´s plantations. At that time, on the Island, there was a severe production of wine and sugar cane, which caused a situation of extreme poverty in the the rural population.

At he beginning of the century XX, during the visit of the Kings of Portugal to Madeira, was also royal Residence. In the middle of the same century, the property was endowed with an importante collection of national palaces and museums, establishing itlself as a “National Palace”, merging its history in the history of the country and the region that has been the scene”.
